Hi Everyone! Welcome back to my blog! This week I’m working on showing you all the resources that will allow you and I to better understand visual literacy. This is Part B to last week’s assignment.

To recap here our my topics and keywords :

The keywords :

Age-Appropriate Visuals in Education

Visual Literacy

21st Century Learning Ability

This week, I wanted to dive deeper into my understanding of visual literacy in education and I found these amazing resources to enrich my understanding of my topics. Here are the few resources that are very useful :

  1. Experimenting the effect of using visual multimedia intervention to inculcate social media literacy skills to tackle fake news

Description : This journal that is written by Zhang’s group is really interesting as they experimented with the effect of using visual multimedia intervention to improve user’s social media literacy skills to combat fake news. It provides the amount of students involved and the methods of how they did their study. This study proved that the group that received the 8 week training using visual multimedia to improve their social media skills demonstrated a better knowledge of social media and had better recognition of fake news then the other group that received no training! This journal is great because it tackles one of my topics which is to seek how I could implement better Social Media Literacy and Visual Literacy in my classroom to further student’s knowledge and in this case, knowledge on how to spot fake news. There is also an age appropriate topic embedded in the article which will allow me to further understand the complexity of visual literacy I should provide for my students.

  1. Teaching Visual Literacy in the Primary Classroom

Description :  This insightful guide talks about how everyday literacy sessions can be made more exciting, dynamic and effective by using various wide range of visual texts in the primary classroom. These techniques I could implement in various types of classrooms and libraries. The guide goes into depth with each chapter and offers advice on how to deliver stimulation literacy sessions and how it can be implemented into current school curriculum. The guide highlights how visuals can engage students and foster creative thinking.

  1. Culturally-Embedded Visual Literacy: A Study of Impression Management via Emoticon, Emoji, Sticker, and Meme on Social Media in China

https://go.exlibris.link/Rf5Gpjxd

Description : This study is very cool because it talks about how on social media, people often showcase themselves to try to make a good impression using texts, pictures, emojis, stickers and memes and visual literacy is not just about knowing how to use them but to also understand each image can be interpreted differently in each culture. They interviewed skilled people that know how to use text and visual for specific images for different people. They found visuals on social media are connected to culture. This is great information to bring back into the classroom because the BC school system and school systems in general is diverse with different cultural backgrounds and knowing more information about the differences and similarities in interpretations of visuals can help when teaching students about visual literacy. This also allows me to see what the reactions would be to using technology in classrooms, integrating emoji, stickers and emoticons into classroom activity.

  1. Chiselled Horizons: A Multi-Cultural Approach to Visual Literacy

https://go.exlibris.link/flJFSB6S

Description : This is another great book on how shaping visual literacy has been such a crucial topic not only in school but also in the news. There are visual domains encoded in educational, public, entertainment industries and many other places. The book discusses various ways to de-construct mass media influences to engage critical thinking skills to tackle complex visuals and explores effects on children. This book also allows for a different look into the multi-modes of visual literacy.

  1. Pixar in a Box : Visual Language

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1p3WmulKbs

Description : In this really informative video on youtube, I was able to deep dive into visual language. I wanted to use this video because these two topics often overlap and if I could get a deeper understanding in visual language it can help provide a clearer picture for visual literacy. I learned Visual language is the system of visual communication, while visual literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use that language. Together, they play a crucial role in how we perceive and communicate in our increasingly visual culture. Visuals are in everything!!

These resources have been crucial in shaping my understanding of visual literacy and its relevance in modern education. They offer a blend of scientific perspectives and practical guidance, which will be invaluable as I continue to explore this topic further. As the course progresses, I'm excited to get deeper into my research. I plan to incorporate insights from these resources into my discussions and explore their implications for the integration of visual literacy into educational practices. The guide focuses on teaching ideas and also focuses on comic visuals as well.

I’m hoping to end with a question from my research online on visual literacy:

If you could be famous for one day, which social media platform would you use to tell your story?

See you all next week for Part C~

  1. You have curated, linked, and annotated a strong list of resources to support your inquiry. Your annotations are detailed and thorough. I also appreciate that you have used traditional as well as non-traditional sources. While I do enjoy seeing pictures of Matcha, and it does add to the personal feel of your blog, I wonder if images that were related more to your research might further enhance insights on visual literacy.
