Vision of the Future (Final)
Hi Everyone in LIBE 477B! Wow, we are in the last week of our class and time flies by quickly!
My digital artifact was using Youtube as my platform to upload “How To’s” and I have three videos uploaded.
How to “Canva” (features to create the best take-home newsletter)
How to use iMovie to edit videos for the year-end slideshow
How to use information literacy to inform your classroom on fake news for internet safety
Youtube?
I used YouTube because I learned from (Basgall et al., 2023) that YouTube specifically, is effective for professional development. The main results found that teachers of all educational stages had satisfactory skills in the use of YouTube to search and communicate information however low, concerning the creation of audiovisual material through YouTube (Basgall et al., 2023). Teachers who use YouTube consider it to be an effective, yet mainly supplementary resource for improving class content, and it is used more by female than male participants. Also 33% pre-service preschool, primary, and secondary teachers said it’s Youtube to thank for the increase in collaboration in the class and school. To further carry out (Basgall et al., 2023) study they had the research objectives to test teachers’ self-perceived levels of digital competence for using Youtube as an educational resource at each educational stage. They used a quantitative method of surveys and carried out analysis. The results were that teachers' ability to use and interact through YouTube were all given positive evaluations in all stages of the educational levels and improved collaboration between student and teacher relationships.
All in all, YouTube is a great platform to learn and use for educational content which is super valuable to complement classroom learning such as helping a student see visually a challenging math problem..etc. Youtube is great for professional development although the study mentioned that the teachers had a low relation to the creation of videos on YouTube, it is still valuable to search and view videos. My digital artifact can help bridge the creation of the video and help BC teachers learn more information in regards to software and technology available. I wanted to also touch upon YouTube’s social factor and mention that although YouTube has great privacy settings, it’s important to remember that there may still be inappropriate videos online and to be aware of that, to protect students and teachers from anything inappropriate. During professional development days, teachers could go on YouTube and search for videos that will complement the learning curriculum and also learn about new technology and software.
My Process & Purpose
When I was working on my project, I was debating between TikTok and Youtube for the digital artifact. I ended up choosing YouTube because I wanted to upload longer videos and TikTok could only allow a maximum amount of minutes which meant I would have to upload lots of videos and I think that would make the page very crowded. YouTube is a platform I'm very familiar with, which meant I was able to upload videos right away and navigating the site was relatively simple. My YouTube page is a common area where BC teachers, community members and other students can come and watch the videos that they need to help them with. I decided to upload three videos first! One on Canva, Internet Literacy and iMovie. These three videos stood out to me as topics because it gives a wide variety of options to the audience in terms of what they want to learn and it’s tailored to the school curriculum. YouTube also gives the audience a way to learn new software/technology right in the comfort of their homes or schools. My purpose is to help provide an additional supplement area for TLs, BC Teachers and community members on their journey of learning technology.
Key Takeaways from LIBE 477B
I found LIBE 477B to be a really fun course and one that I will take with me in my future endeavours. I learned so much from visual literacy, reading cultures and how to use Blogger! I’ve also read so many amazing blogs from my classmates. I appreciated learning about how to continue and spark reading cultures in my community. I also really enjoyed learning about libraries around the world and how at times, learning new information can be a privilege that shouldn’t be taken for granted. This course not only advocates for life long learning but I seriously connected with really great people here.
Leading from the Library
Leading from the Library was the book that inspired my direction for my final project. The book mentions “Collaborate with individual or group of teachers and identify the challenge they are experiencing” Miller and Bass (2019). This led me to think of ways to improve and help increase the structure of learning for the 21st century. I believe that technology can play a crucial role in the student’s learning and I’m passionate about implementing creative outlets for teachers, community members and teacher librarians to use. The challenge that some staff members such as teachers feel when wanting to use technology is not getting enough support hence, my final project which will showcase “How To’s” can help teachers with certain topics. I see my YouTube channel as an ongoing channel that can hopefully foster connection amongst the community and bring people together to continue the conversations. "how you think about your time and your influence in the communities” Miller and Bass (2019). This part of the book reminds me that if we all put aside a bit of time to share a video with our co-workers or other fellow teachers, it may influence them to do the same and have a ripple effect to make technology information more accessible. This way it fosters a great community.

Beyond this course
In using Youtube, I have a plan for continuing my digital artifact and intentionally spreading the videos by sending them to my previous teachers from high school and elementary. I will also tag other creators in the comments in hopes that they will also create similar content. I also hope to generate an audience organically on YouTube and word of mouth. To gain feedback on what videos to film and feedback on the content, I will send Qualtrics surveys after I send the videos to my teachers and also monitor the comment section.
P.S
~Happy Almostt Holidays!

What great videos! I also used Canva to make my artifact and I agree that it is definitely one of the most user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing sites available for desktop publishing. I haven't really played around with Canva beyond figuring out what I needed to do but your tutorial has given me quite a few new tools and tricks to incorporate into my future projects. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow! These videos are great! Very user friendly. Canva is such a powerful tool available to educators and students that is highly underused. I think supporting teachers in this by creating how to videos like this is a brilliant idea.
ReplyDeleteI never realized you could change the font of the text in iMovie! Not sure how I missed that but I appreciate your video teaching me something new! Also, Canva is the best and I use it for my own weekly classroom newsletter. I'm sure you have the free education account that gives you more functionality, but if you don't, I highly recommend it!! :)
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the structure and format of your videos. Having them under five minutes means that busy teachers can get advice quickly and efficiently. I think your early topics on Canva and iMovie are so effective because it not only informs on a new technology but it gives a direct and functional usage. I can see the idea of creating a class slideshow on iMovie as a way to pull in a lot of teachers who otherwise would not see the purpose in exploring it! Thanks for sharing.
